Records of ACTRA include files of the National Office (1950-1989) and branch offices (1948-1983); files on interactions with government offices (1949-1982), cultural and labour associations (1949-1981), talent agents (1957-1980), and engagers (broadcasters, production houses, advertising agencies, and other employers, 1952-1983). Other records detail union stewards (1959-1983), employment in advertising and commercials (1971-1983), and media coverage of ACTRA (1952-1982).
Records of predecessor unions include minutes of the Radio Artists of Toronto Society (RATS) (1943-1944) and files from the Association of Radio (and Television) Artists (ACRA) (1944-1963) and the Canadian Council of Authors and Artists (CCAA) (1953-1965).
Records on microfilm include files of predecessor unions: RATS (1943-44), CCAA (1953-1963) and ACRA and ACTRA (1950-1972). The files are located on microfilm reels M-3624 and M-3625.
The fonds includes photographs (1961-1987). The majority of photographs depict ACTRA and Equity members (1976-1987). There are also photographs of meetings of CCAA, Telstar, and the International Federation of Actors (FIA).
Fonds also includes a series of oral history interviews conducted by ACTRA members with Canadian performers (1998-1999). Other audio-visual material includes a film presentation produced by ACTRA for the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) hearing on Canadian content in broadcasting (1970) and a sound recording demo tape produced by the ACTRA Talent Office in Toronto consisting of samples of commercials read by an announcer represented by their agency (1968).Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists : Union organization for Canadian broadcast artists dates from the early 1940s, when local associations of radio artists were formed in several cities. These local associations joined to form the Association of Canadian Radio Artists (ACRA). In 1952, the Canadian Council of Authors and Artists (CCAA) was established by the merger of ACRA with the Union des Artistes de Montréal, the Société des Artistes de Montréal, and the Société des Artistes de Québec. The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) recognized the CCAA in 1953 and eventually signed agreements covering writers and performers in radio and television. The CCAA was a loose national federation in which member organizations exercised considerable autonomy.
In 1959, the French-language membership supported the Montreal CBC producers in their strike for recognition, despite contrary instructions from the CCAA national leaders. Following this controversy, the French-language groups left the CCAA in 1960 and formed the Fédération des Auteurs et des Artistes du Canada.
In 1963, the CCAA became the Association of Canadian Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA), with a new constitution and a more centralized national structure. ACTRA has been the principal national union for writers and performers (including actors, singers, dancers, puppeteers, announcers, commentators, and hosts) working in the English language in radio, television and film; the union also represents writers of stage plays. ACTRA's strength has derived from the comprehensiveness and solidarity of its membership, and not from legislative protection such as certification. Most of its members are contracted for each production and are not considered employees under federal labour relations legislation. ACTRA is organized into regional branches and (since 1983) into national guilds for each of the major craft groups it represents (writers, performers, and broadcast journalists).
In addition to negotiating and enforcing collective agreements and providing benefits for members, ACTRA is also interested in issues such as Canadian content and the use of foreign talent in the broadcast media and film industry. ACTRA collaborates with other Canadian talent unions, such as the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) and the Canadian Actors' Equity Association (CAEA). ACTRA is affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), the International Writers' Guild (IWG) and the International Federation of Actors (FIA). Since 1971, it has sponsored the ACTRA Awards to honour distinguished work by its members.
