9 maps.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Fonds consists of correspondence, diaries and survey notebooks, memoranda and manuscripts dealing with William Ogilvie's surveys in the Northwest, Blackfoot and Sioux Indians, mining, conditions in Alaska and the Yukon, and the Klondike gold rush, 1846-1912.
The fonds also contains photographs, n.d., 1887-[ca. 1910], depicting views of the Yukon and Alaska, including a shot of the Ogilvie Bridge over the Klondike River near Dawson City; an Inuit woman known as "The Madonna of the Yukon"; log cabins; a horse-drawn wagon carrying supplies; the steamer J.B. Robertson; sternwheel steamers; an applied science class, McGill University; official farewell dinner to Ogilvie on his retirement as Governor, Dawson, Yukon; Dutch Harbour by evening, Aleutian Island; and the annual dinner of the London Invernesshire Association, London, England.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Ogilvie, William, 1846-1912 : William Ogilvie was born in April 1846 in Gloucester, Carleton, Ontario to James Ogilvie of Belfast, Ireland and Margaret Holliday Ogilvie of Peebles, Scotland. Ogilvie articled as a surveyor with Robert Sparks, qualifying to practice as a Provincial Land Surveyor in 1869. and became a Dominion Land Surveyor in 1872. Between 1875 and 1898, he conducted a number of surveys and explorations in the Northwest Territories for the Dominion government, notably in the Peace River and Mackenzie River districts and along the Canada-Alaska boundary. From 1887 to 1889, Ogilvie was involved in George Mercer Dawson's exploration and survey expedition in what later became the Yukon Territory. He surveyed the Chilkoot Pass, the Yukon and Porcupine rivers. Ogilvie established the location of the boundary between the Yukon and Alaska on the 141st meridian west.
From 1898 to 1901, he was commissioner of the Yukon Territory. He was the author of Early Days on the Yukon (1913) and 'The Klondike Official Guide' (1898). The Ogilvie Mountains, Ogilvie River and Ogilvie Aerodrome in the Northern Yukon Territory along with Ogilvie Valley in the Southern Yukon Territory are named after him.
