It was established in the context of an international movement of non-governmental organizations focused on evaluating the role and the World Bank and the IMF at the time of their 50th Anniversary. Canadian NGOs founded the HI to ensure that demands for fundamental reform of the international financial institutions were high on the agenda of the G7's 1995 Halifax Summit.
HI worked through research, education, advocacy and alliance-building to transform the international financial system and its institutions to achieve poverty eradication, environmental sustainability and an equitable re-distribution of wealth. Their work has primarily focused on the World Bank, the IMF, debt and the Tobin Tax. In 1999, they started an NGO Working Group on Export Development Canada (EDC), recognizing the critical role of export credit agencies in the international financial system.
In 2015, the Halifax Initiative closed its operations. That same year a new organization, Above Ground, was established to build on the Halifax Initiative's work on corporate accountability. Through research and analysis, Above Ground exposes human rights violations associated with the overseas operations of Canadian companies.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Donated in 2015 by the Halifax Initiative.Note sur le classement :The fonds is divided into six series: Correspondence; Minutes; Working group on EDC; Press releases, media advisories and briefs; Reports and papers; and photographs.Source :Privé -
