Commodities Branch : The first Commodity Officers were appointed in Trade and Commerce in 1933. These technical specialists acted as liaison between Canadian firms and Trade Commissioners abroad to provide expert information on potential markets for Canadian goods. With the establishment of the Commodities Branch in January 1949, Trade and Commerce began to stress the import side of Canadian external trade. Grouped with this Branch were the Export and Import Divisions, the Export Permit Branch, the Transportation and Communications Division, Timber Control, and the Priorities Branch. With the establishment of the Department of Defence Production in 1951 (15 Geo. VI Chap. 4), the Steel Division and that section dealing with applications for United States priorities in defence purchasing were transferred from the Commodities Branch to the new Department. Several changes were made in the Commodities Branch in 1952. Fisheries Section amalgamated with Agricultural Commodities Branch to form the Agricultural and Fisheries Branch. The Wheat and Grain Division, which became simply the Grain Division in 1953, was added. In 1953 also, the Commodities Branch was reorganized into three divisions: Transportation and Trade Services, Machinery and Metals, and Consumer Products.
