Commission to Review Salaries of Members of Parliament and Senators (1984) : Prior to 1975, Members of Parliament voted themselves pay increases, but in that year, the Senate and House of Commons Act was amended to provide for the establishment of an independent commission to be appointed after each federal election for that purpose (Senate and House of Commons Act, 23-24 Eliz.II, c.44, 1975). The first such commission was appointed in 1979.
The Commission to Review Salaries of Members of Parliament and Senators (1984), consisting of Chairman William H. Clarke and Colin Campbell, was established by P.C. 3417, 25 October 1984 to inquire and report upon the annual variations of sessional allowances and other allowances payable to members of the Senate and the House of Commons. The Privy Council Office was responsible for the provision of facilities and administrative and financial services.
