The fonds includes the following series: Personal records of Pierre de Bané; Member of Parliament; Senator; Minister of Supply and Services; Minister of Regional Economic Expansion; Minister of State for External Affairs; Minister of Fisheries and Oceans; Audiovisual records of Pierre de Bané.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :De Bané, Pierre, 1938-2019 : Pierre de Bané was born on August 2, 1938 in Haifa, Mandatory Palestine (today Israel), to Lebanese parents. The family immigrated to Canada in 1947 to escape the impending war and settled in Quebec. Pierre de Bané studied law and subsequently became a lawyer before entering active politics. He is the first person of Arab ancestry to be elected to the Canadian House of Commons.
He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1968 general election and served as an MP for sixteen years. In 1978, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed Pierre de Bané to the council of ministers, as Minister of Supply and Services. He found himself on the opposition benches when the Liberals were defeated in the 1979 election, but was again appointed to the council of ministers as Minister of Regional Economic Expansion when the Liberals returned to power in 1980 In 1982, de Bané became Minister of State for External Relations and, eight months later, became Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. Pierre de Bané was appointed to the Senate by Trudeau just days before the Prime Minister retires. De Bané remained a senator until August 2, 2013. He died on January 9, 2019.Source :Privé -
