He immigrated to Canada with his family and settled in Woodstock, Ontario. As a teenager, he started working for Hay and Co., a furniture manufacturer in Woodstock, where he was involved in a strike and was elected steward. In 1959, he became president of Local 636, United Auto Workers (UAW).
He climbed through the ranks of the UAW. In 1960, he was named UAW international representative for Canada. In 1972, he was named administrative assistant to Canadian Director Dennis McDermott and, in 1978, succeeded him as Canadian Director.
In the 1980s, the Canadian membership left the UAW to form the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW). The split was caused by disagreements between the Canadian District of the UAW and the US-based UAW leadership during collective bargaining with General Motors. Bob White was the founding president of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW).
From 1992 to 1999, he was the president of the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).
He was also president of the Trade Union Advisory Committee (TUAC) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and was the chair of the Commonwealth Trade Union Council and of the Human and Trade Union Rights Committee of the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.
In 1990, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada.
He died in 2017 in Kincardine, Ontario.Information additionnelle :Note générale :For more information on Bob White, see his autobiography "Hard bargains: my life on the line" (McClelland & Stewart, 1987).
