He commanded the same regiment at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham on 13 September 1759 and was chosen by Major-General James Wolfe to carry the news of victory and subsequently of Wolfe's death to England. As a result Hale received a reward, a grant of land in Nova Scotia (which was never taken up) and a royal warrant to raise a regiment of light cavalry. This he did by November 1759 and became Lieutenant-Colonel in the newly formed 18th Light Dragoons (renumbered the 17th in 1763). He was commissioned as first colonel of the 17th Light Dragoons in 1763. In the same year he married Mary, second daughter of William Challoner of Guisborough. They had eleven sons and ten daughters.
Reynolds, Joshua, Sir, 1723-1792 : Sir Joshua Reynolds, born 1723, Plypton Earl, died 1792, London. English portrait painter and aesthetician who dominated English artistic life in the middle and late 18th century. Through his art and teaching, he attempted to lead British painting away from the indigenous anecdotal pictures of the early 18th century toward the formal rhetoric of the continental Grand Style. With the founding of the Royal Academyy in 1768, Reynolds was elected its first president and knighted by King George III.
