Memorabilia from nursing sisters, 1885-2000.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Nursing Sisters' Association of Canada : The first nurses (called nursing sisters) to officially serve with the Canadian military were in the Northwest Rebellion of 1885. During the South African War, three groups of nursing sisters were sent to take care of Canadian troops. In 1906, a permanent nursing service was established and the nursing sisters were given officer rank. Over 3 000 nursing sisters served in the First World War of whom 47 died while on active duty. During the Second World War, 4 480 nursing sisters served in all three services and in all Canadian operational areas, 13 died while serving. Sixty nursing sisters served in the Korean War. Now called Nursing Officers, nurses continue to provide care to the Canadian military.
The campaign to erect a memorial to the nursing sisters of the First World War acted as a catalyst for the formation of local associations of nursing sisters across Canada. The unveiling of the memorial in the Parliament Buildings in August 1926 undoubtedly aided the formation of the Overseas Nursing Sisters' Association of Canada (ONSAC) in July 1929. The existing associations became local units of the ONSAC. There were major changes in 1944; the name was changed to the Nursing Sisters' Association of Canada (NSAC) and nursing sisters who had not served overseas were allowed to become members. The nursing sisters returning from the Second World War boosted the ranks of NSAC. The aims of NSAC are: to maintain friendship among nursing sisters, to work for national unity and international peace and to assist nursing sisters in need.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Acquired from the Canadian Nurses Association Archives in 2000.
