It includes correspondence with cabinet members, members of the civil service, politicians, foreign leaders, personal friends and advisors, as well as the general public. The correspondence documents a wide range of topics, and covers almost all the political and social questions of the day.
The unnumbered correspondence is a product of those periods when the volume of mail received in the PMO (Prime Ministers Office) became unmanageable and the numeric classification system broke down. The unnumbered files were not fully processed by the staff of the PMO filing section. As a result, there is no index for this series.
The series was subsequently arranged by the National Archives into the same subject filing system used in the PMO, and as found in Series VI. The subject classifications are identified in the finding aid for both Series VI and Series VIII. Researchers should check for related material in both series.
