The first Canadian local was founded at Kitchener during the winter of 1937-1938. The union achieved rapid growth in Canada during the Second World War, and by June 1946 had 12,300 members, largely concentrated in the plants of the four major tire manufacturers in Ontario. Uneven growth in the postwar period was marked by the establishment of a number of new locals in Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta. By 1978 the Union had 16,300 members, organized in 83 locals in the three provinces.
The Union took its present name in 1948. The Canadian section, District 6, was affiliated with the Canadian Congress of Labour (CCL) and subsequently with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC).
The URW merged with the United Steelworkers of America (USW) in 1995.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received in 1981 from the URW District 6 office, Toronto, Ontario.
