Description of Mr. D. Hill's outfit on page 2 in the February 24th, 1876 edition of the "Ottawa Free Press,": "Hill, Dr- Santa Claus. & Loose dark brown blouse, a la Santa Claus, with capuchin trimmed with holly leaves and scarlet berries, flowing white beard; whiskers and moustache, heavy boots turned down showing pink lining, the whole snowed over, and bearing in his hand the time honoured Christmas tree."Additional name(s):Additional information:General note:Such an extensive and detailed verbal description in the following account was necessary before the advent of newspaper photography. Topley's composite photograph, making use of this image, was made in an era prior to, but substituting for, newspaper photography.Dates of creation note:Although the Earl of Dufferin's Grand Fancy Ball took place on February 23, 1876, photographs of costumed individuals and groups were taken after the event itself.
