Transport Canada. Marine : With the establishment of the Department of Transport in 1936, Marine Services originally consisted of the Navigation Branch, Pilotage Services, Nautical Service, Board of Steamship Inspection, and various regional offices to administer the marine function. Over the years there have been a number of administrative reorganizations. In 1960, a restructuring of the Department of Transport left the Marine Services with the Marine Regulations Branch, Marine Operations Branch, Shipbuilding Branch and Marine Works Branch. Canadian Marine Transportation Administration, as it was redesignated in 1970, was responsible for various marine agencies and provided direction for the operation of marine terminals, facilities and services. For many years the Canadian Marine Transportation Administration (CMTA) coordinated the functions of the Canadian Coast Guard, the four Pilotage Authorities and the Canarctic Shipping Company. In 1985, the CMTA was renamed as Marine Group and operational responsibility for marine departments were consolidated into this new Group. The Canada Transportation Act received royal assent in June 1996, and officially became law on 1 July 1996. This Act, in addition to the Canada Marine Act, introduced in June 1996, consolidated and modernized the marine regulatory branches. As part of this overhaul, the Canadian Coast Guard was transferred from the Department of Transport and was merged with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans on 1 April 1995.Additional information:General note:RG12M 58-1261 lacks items #58-: 1268, 1273, 1276, 1278, 1279, 1282-84, 1288, 1294, 1300-02, 1313-14, 1321, 1340, 1344, and 1348.Source of title:Title is based on the contents of the series.Physical description note:RG12M 58-1261: Most items are stamped: Chief Engineer's Office, Dept.
