The material in this series reflects a range of communications-related activities undertaken by the department and its predecessors, including:
- Commissioning and sponsoring of motion pictures and films (primarily made by the National Film Board of Canada)
- Distribution of films, photographs, and other promotional material
- Creation of exhibitions
- Creation of departmental publications
- Creation and distribution of news releases and press items
- Development of speeches and official statements
The textual files in this series deal mainly with subjects related to northern economic development and the promotion of National Parks and Historic Sites from the era 1936-1960.
The photographic material in this series documents a variety of department-sponsored events from 1900-1979, including visits of dignitaries and politicians with indigenous peoples. Images of indigenous peoples engaged in occupations and activities that aligned with the department's assimilation policies feature heavily. The photos are primarily from the era 1950s-1960s, when the Department of Citizenship and Immigration was responsible for indigenous affairs. The audiovisual material attached to this series includes, but is not limited to, records documenting the signing of agreements, the history of various aboriginal communities, and issues related to the environment and natural resources in the North. Information Division : The Information Division of the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development was responsible for such matters as compiling and editing departmental press releases, exhibitions, publications, and biographical material and speeches of ministers and deputy ministers. The division also handled relations with the National Film Board and private film companies, and correspondence with other departments, magazines and associations. The division has subsequently been renamed the Communications Branch.
