Stupart (1909-1929), and John Patterson (1906-1955). Mixed in with this official correspondence is some personal correspondence of J. Meteorological Division. Office of the Controller : When the Meteorological Service was established in 1871, the first director was Professor George Templeton Kingston. He was succeeded by his assistant Charles Carpmael in 1880. After Carpmael's death in 1894, Sir Frederic Stupart (1857-1940) was appointed director, a post he held until his retirement in 1929. His successor, John Patterson (1872- 1956) was the last director of the Meteorological Service while it was part of the Marine Branch of the Department of Marine and Fisheries. In 1936, the Meteorological Service was transferred to the Department of Transport and Patterson became Controller of the Air Service's Meteorological Division, a position he held from until 1946 [see Morley Thomas, Forecasts for Flying: Meteorology in Canada 1918-1939 (Toronto: ECW Press, 1996)].
