ca. 381 technical drawings on 265 sheets : some blueprints, some blueline prints.
ca. 63 maps.Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Board of Steamship Inspection and its successor, Canadian Steamship Inspection Services.
Under the terms of the Steamboat Inspection Act of 1886 and its subsequent amendments, all Canadian-registered steamships of over on-hundred and fifty tons gross weight were liable for annual inspection. The examinations were conducted by inspectors appointed by the Department of Marine collectively known as the Board of Steamship Inspection, and later, under the Department of Transport, as the Steamship Inspector's Office. Inspectors were required to make a detailed survey of the hull, boiler, and all other machinery, and could require the production of any certificate necessary to the operation of the vessel.
The reports of annual steamship inspections include "sealed boiler affidavits" and other relevant certificates. The reports offer a detailed survey of engine-works and machinery together with ships' information: for example, port of registry, dimensions, tonnage, registration number, and type of vessel.
Series also includes plans of steamships Klondike I, Klondike II, Whitehorse, and Aksala, and plans of the RCMP auxiliary schooner St. Roch. There are also drawings of various categories of vessels prepared by Wartime Merchant Shipping Ltd., Montreal, including: Park, Armament maintenance, Escort maintenance, Naval stores issuing, North sands, Victory tankers, "B" type coasters, 4700 tonner, 4700 tonner "Dominion style", Victory, "Canadian" type cargo and "C" type coaster ships. With the drawings are index cards for the "Park", "Fort" and other ship categories and index cards for ships routes by province and territory; lists of ships drawings; and correspondence giving completion dates, name changes, and vessels sold.
Eighty drawings of the hull, machinery and electrical apparatus for the "Abegweit" were prepared by German & Milne, 1947. The maps were collected by the Board of Steamship Inspection, which became the Ship Safety Branch.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Canadian Steamship Inspection Services : Under the terms of the STEAMBOAT INSPECTION ACT of 1886 (49 Vic., cap. 78) and its subsequent amendments, all Canadian-registered steamships of over one-hundred and fifty tons gross weight were liable for annual inspection. The examinations were conducted by inspectors appointed by the Department of Marine collectively known as the Board on Steamboat Inspection, and later, under the Department of Transport, as the Steamship Inspector's Office, Canadian Steamship Inspection Services. Inspectors were required to make a detailed survey of the hull, boiler, and all other machinery, and could require the production of any certificate necessary to the operation of the vessel. By 1963 Steamship Inspection was headed by a Controller and was a part of the Marine Regulations Branch.
Previous to 1868, the passenger, freight, and tug steamers of Ontario and Quebec were examined by inspectors of steamboats and an inspection fee was charged. Periodically these inspectors met in various locations and formed a Board to examine engineers. In New Brunswick steamers were examined without fee by the Government Inspector of Steamboats, whose salary was defrayed from the Public Treasury. The new Act (31 Victoria, Chapter 65, 22 May 1868) appointed inspectors for different districts to form a board presided over by a chairman. This Act repealed the Consolidated Statutes of Canada, chapter 45; 23 Victoria, chapter 28; 27-28 Victoria, chapter 15; Revised Statutes of Nova Scotia, chapter 77; and 28 Victoria, chapter 4 of New Brunswick.Information additionnelle :Source du titre :Title is based on the contents of the series.Note sur la description matérielle :RG12M 70-12872: Technical drawings: Items are numbered in pencil on the verso.
