Sound recordings include the following: speeches made by Thomas Appleton; comments by Appleton to accompany photographs (or possibly slides?) of Canadian Icebreakers; a radio program entitled Those Were the Days, about the C.D. Howe, Canadian Medical Supply Ship for the Eastern Artic, with Appleton and others; and an interview on CBC Radio with Appleton.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Appleton, Thomas E : Marine Historian Thomas Appleton was born in Scotland and pursued a career in the Merchant Navy before obtaining his engineering degree in 1936. During World War II, he was captain of a ship whose mission was to detect mines and escort other ships in the North Sea and the English Channel. After the war, he served as chief engineer and this brought him to Canada in 1953 as a member of the technical staff of the chief marine engineer.
In 1960, Appleton joined the marine services branch of the Department of Transport, where he worked in operational and regulatory activities, before holding a position in marine administration. He was then put in charge of the Marine Historian's Office. In addition to publishing various articles on marine history, he was also responsible for answering letters from researchers in marine history. His main contribution is his book Usque ad Mare on the history of the marine service and the Canadian Coast Guard.Information additionnelle :Note générale :RG12M 82303/29: These ships plans were collected from the record holdings of Transport Canada, such as the Office of Steamship Inspection.
