Langue du document :anglaisPortée et contenu :War Office 120 consists of 70 volumes of registers of pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. They provide personal and service details of enlisted regular army soldiers and British militiamen discharged to pension from 1713 to 1868. These pensions were granted initially for disability or unfitness which arose from service. Over time, regulations were passed to make length of service a principal factor in the award of pensions.
The National Archives has acquired registers of pensioners of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, in eleven overlapping chronological series, arranged by the regiments in which the soldiers last served and by their admission date to the hospital. Up to l843 (Volumes l-51) entries give a brief description of the pensioner, with age, place of birth, particulars of service and the reason for discharge. Registers of men receiving pensions after 1843 (Volumes 52-70) give only the date of the award of the pension, rate of pension, and district in which the man received his pension. From about l812, dates of death have been noted and in the last series these dates extend to l877. The microfilmed originals are available on microfilm reels B-5690 to B-5714.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Great Britain. Royal Hospital Chelsea : The Royal Hospital Chelsea was founded in 1682 by Charles II as a home for aged veterans and men broken by war (i.e., "in-pensioners"). As an alternative to hospitalization and as a reward for long and valuable service, pensions were offered (i.e., "out-pensioners"). Over time, regulations were passed to make length of service and character the principal ingredients for pension and not disability.Vedette-matière :Source :PrivéAncien no de référence archivistique :MG13-WO120 -
