Fonds consists of correspondence, n.d., 1898-1902, received by David Seath, Secretary, Volunteer Veterans Association, Montreal, relating to the award of the General Service Medal for Canada to militia veterans of the Fenian Raids and Red River Expedition. Correspondents include individual veterans and their families, and the Medals Claim Board, Department of Militia and Defence.

Seath, David, 1847-1917 : David Seath (1847-1917), military officer, had long service in the Canadian Volunteer Militia. He first joined the 3rd Battalion, The Victoria Volunteer Rifles of Montreal, as a Private in 1864. In 1867, he was gazetted Lieutenant with the 6th Battalion Volunteer Militia Rifles of Canada (Hochelaga Light Infantry). In 1905, he was made paymaster of that regiment with the honorary rank of Major. He had been called to duty in 1866 and 1870, for service during the Fenian Raids scares. In June 1898, the General Service Medal for Canada was authorized to be issued to those militia veterans still living who had seen service during the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870, or who had participated in the 1870 Red River Expedition. As Secretary of the Volunteer Veterans Association of Montreal, David Seath was instrumental in having the claims of militia veterans recognized. In addition to these military activities, David Seath was Secretary for the Montreal Harbour Commission from 1898 until his death in 1917.
