The complete collection has been microfilmed and this material is located on microfilm reels C-13100, C-15611 to C-15618, C-15676 to C-15679, C-15769 to C-15787 and H-1829.
Collection also consists of a sketchbook illustrating the Chaudière Falls, Lake Tsigonomi, the Saguenay and Lake Saint-Jean regions. Works by Samuel Neilson Jr.
Collection also consists of 2017 postal covers for the period 1766 to 1858.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Neilson (family) : John Neilson 1775-1848, emigrated from Scotland in 1790 to join his brother Samuel Neilson (1771-1793), who had succeeded their uncle William Brown (1738-1789) as proprietor of the Quebec Gazette. John Neilson succeeded as proprietor in 1797. He gradually assumed a number of public offices and responsibilities, including membership in the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada, 1818-1834 and 1841-1844, and a seat on the Legislative Council, 1844-1848. He was an active Reformer, in association with Louis-Joseph Papineau and Denis-Benjamin Viger, until 1834, and was a delegate to London in 1822 and 1828 with other Reformers and in 1835 on behalf of the Lower Canada Constitutional Association.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Documents collected by George M. Fairchild, relating to the history of Valcartier were received from Miss C.N. Fairchild of Bergerville, Québec.Historique de la conservation :Some transcripts were made in 1908 from correspondence then in the possession of Col. Hubert Neilson of Cap Rouge (vol. 32-33). The bulk of the collection was acquired in 1911. Further transcriptions were made in 1924 (vol. 15) and some additional items were acquired in 1971-1972 and 1976 (vol. 192).Note sur le classement :The Neilson Collection is composed of material from various sources. In addition, John Louis Hubert Neilson, a grandson, had historical interests which led him to acquire documents, many of which became intermingled with the family papers. As a result, the content of volumes is difficult to categorize; neither dates nor type of document nor subjects provide accurate clues to the sequence of volumes. The material can be described within four basic series but volume titles must not be considered as exclusive definitions of their contents.Note de citation/référence :Portions of the collection were calendared on acquisition and the calendar was printed in the Public Archives REPORT for 1913, Appendix G and 1918, Appendix D. Those listings and the index of correspondence in volume 34 no longer relate to the arrangement of the collection.Note sur les expositions :Exhibition Title: Records of Our History: Canada, 1760-1815.
