RG10M 78903/16, transferred to GCARS from Federal Archives Division in June, 1978.

RG10M 78903/45, transferred to GCARS from Federal Archives Division, RG10, Black Series, vols. 3556 to 4093. Only files identified as those containing maps and plans were checked.

RG10M 88967, transferred to Visual and Sound Archives in Jan. 1989 from Government Archives Division, RG10, vol. 3848, file #75236-1 (Black Series).

RG10M 90110, provenance of this item is uncertain. The Surveyor General transferred the map to the archives of the Indian Affairs Branch, see letter dated 28 August 1957 on file. There is no record of the transfer from Indian Affairs to the National Archives.

Scales differ.

Microfilmed copies are available on reels C-10098 to C-10205, C-11063. At the time of their microfilming, not all records in this series were open to unrestricted access. The open files were filmed on one set of reels (C-10098 to C-10187 and C-11063). The closed files were filmed on a separate set of restricted reels. Of the reels which were originally restricted, the following have subsequently been reviewed and declared open: C-10188 to C-10198, C-10200 to C-10204. No further accruals are expected.

A set of letter registers and indices to them is available and provides a content list for the incoming correspondence of the Black Series and succeeding file series up to 1959. See the "Registers, Indices and Indexed Registers" sub-series (RG10-B-3-g) within this sous-fonds. While it is generally true that Black Series records relate to western Canada while those found in the Red Series relate to eastern Canada, a qualification must be made. Issues with a national dimension will usually be found documented in the Red Series and so one cannot assume that there are no records relating to western Canada in the Red Series. For this reason, for certain issues, users may need to consult the Red Series in addition to the Black Series.
