Historique de la conservation :
Mary Elsie Stephen Reford (1872-1967) was the daughter of Robert Meighen and Elsie Stephen. She married Robert W. Reford in 1894. As Lord Mount Stephen's favourite niece he gave her his country property known as Estevan Lodge on the Métis River. There Elsie Reford developed the property into an internationally recognized garden that became known as the Jardins de Métis.
The journal was once in Mary Elsie Stephen Reford's possession, and was a gift from Arthur Doughty, the Dominion Archivist who appears to have had a side career helping Canadiana collectors amass their collections. Apparently, since the manuscript had been transcribed and printed, Doughty though the original document could well be in the hands of a collector rather than the Dominion Archives.
The journal was donated to Library and Archives Canada by Aurora Reford, a Reford family descendent.
