This accession includes some of the flag designs submitted to a joint committee of the Senate and the House of Commons in 1945. The committee was created to consider and report on a suitable design for a distinctive Canadian flag. The committee received about 1500 submissions from Canadians across the country.

This box of flag designs, submitted in 1945 to the Special Joint Committee on the National Flag, is the result of a transfer of records by the Government Archives Division archivist in 1994 to a media archivist. The box in this accession represents a selection of flag designs that were originally contained in a much larger accession of Standing Committees, Special Committees and Joint Committees records that were transferred to the then National Archives of Canada during the 1980s. The note on the container states, "RG14, 87-88/146, Material selected by T. McIntosh."
