This sub-series of photographs documents the activities of Prime Minister Paul Martin from December 2003 to February 2006. Its main element is the series of digital photographs taken by Dave Chan, Brigitte Bouvier and Patrick Doyle, the Prime Minister's official photographers. These photos provide a complete and day-by-day photographic account of Paul Martin's term as Prime Minister.
The sub-series documents all the international and national events in which Paul Martin took part as Prime Minister. The national events illustrated by this documentary collection include the swearing-in of Paul Martin as Prime Minister in December 2003 and in July 2004; the federal election campaigns of 2004 and of 2005-2006; Paul Martin's trip to Northern Canada in August 2004; the First Ministers Meeting on health care in September 2004; Queen Elizabeth II's visit to Canada in May 2005; the appointment of Michaëlle Jean to the position of Governor General of Canada in September 2005; and the signing of the Kelowna Accord in November 2005. The sub-series also documents Paul Martin's meetings with other Canadian political leaders, namely, opposition leaders Stephen Harper, Jack Layton and Gilles Duceppe; and provincial Premiers Danny Williams, Pat Binns, John Hamm, Bernard Lord, Jean Charest, Dalton McGuinty, Gary Doer, Lorne Calvert, Ralph Klein and Gordon Campbell. Moreover, the sub-series illustrates the dynamics and the atmosphere in the Prime Minister's office, between Paul Martin and his senior advisors.
The international events depicted in this sub-series include the APEC Summit held in November 2005 in Busan, South Korea; the G8 Summits in Sea Island, United States, in June 2004, and in Gleneagles, Scotland, in July 2005 (including photographs of Paul Martin with U2 singer Bono). the Summits of the Americas in Monterrey, Mexico, in 2004, and in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2005; Paul Martin's visit to the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, where he was received by Akihito, Emperor of Japan, in January 2005; as well as all of Paul Martin's meetings with his foreign counterparts, including President of the United States George W. Bush; Prime Minister of Great Britain Tony Blair; President of France Jacques Chirac; Prime Minister of Japan Junichiro Koizumi; President of the People's Republic of China Hu Jintao; President of Russia Vladimir Putin; President of Mexico Vicente Fox; United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan; Prime Minister of Ireland Bertie Ahern; President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai; President of Brazil Lula da Silva; Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh; President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf; Prime Minister of Israel Ariel Sharon; German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder; the Dalai Lama; President of the Sudan Omar al-Bashir; and President of Libya Muammar Qaddafi.
