Accession consists of records created and/or maintained by the British Columbia Penitentiary.

The accession includes records of statutory and earned remission cards for individual inmates at various institutions, including Agassiz Correctional Work Camp (A.C.W.C.), Mountain Institution, Mission Institution, Ferndale Institution, Elbow Lake Institution, and British Columbia Penitentiary. Cards contain inmate names, numbers, offenses, sentences, dates of admissions, dates of birth, aggregate sentences, statutory remissions, earned remissions, earliest release dates, parole dates, and destinations upon release.

Accession also includes staff information cards containing names, dates of birth, marital status, employee and other identification numbers, addresses, telephone numbers, job classifications, and photographs.

Accession also includes one file relating to a British Columbia Penitentiary property in Pitt Lake known as Goose Island, Wright Island, Convict Island, or Pen Island. File includes correspondence relating to the acquisition of the property, work on the property, the selling of the property, and two carrier pigeon messages from guards on the island to the British Columbia Penitentiary site in New Westminster.

These records were transferred to Library and Archives Canada by Tony Martin, a former employee of British Columbia Penitentiary.
