The Canadian Air Transportation Administration (CATA) directed the management of all operational, developmental, and regulatory activities of transport Canada in support of aeronautics, and was responsible for maintaining and promoting all aspects of air safety. CATA was a decentralized operation; in addition to the office of the air administrator at Ottawa, there were regional administrators in Moncton, N.B., Dorval, Quebec, Willowvale, Ontario, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Edmonton, Alberta, and Vancouver, British Columbia. The Central Regional Office was based in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It applied Transport Canada's programs, policies and regulations in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, parts of Northern Ontario and parts of the Northwest Territories from [1960 ] to [1985 ]. In [1985] the Central Regional Office merged with the Western Regional Office to form the Prairie and Northern Regional Office., The records in this accession consist of registry subject files created in the office of the air administrator for the central region, Winnipeg, Manitoba, relating to a variety of operations and activities including the registration of aircraft, airports, flying clubs, telecommunications facilities, administrative and housekeeping files. The accession also includes some files and records created at Regina and Winnipeg airports. Boxes 1, 58-59 contain aircraft registration, inspection and operation files from the 5008 file block of the central registry subject file classification system for the Department of Transport. These files pertain specifically to aircrafts whose registration has been cancelled and deleted from the Canadian Civil Aircraft Register. Aircraft registration files are arranged chronologically, therein alphabetically by aircraft identification number. Researchers should note that the aircraft marks may be listed as either C-FXXX or CF-XXX.
