The majority of items in this series are First World War maps. Included are topographic map sheets, ordnance survey maps and trench maps of the Western Front. Also included are situation and intelligence log target maps as well as 14 air photographs of France and Belgium. Other maps relate to the Second World War and include road maps of Italy and maps of North Africa. Also included in the accession are tourist maps and Michelin road maps of various parts of Europe as well as a map of the city of Chicago.

The Rt. Hon Georges P. Vanier was born in Montreal on April 23, 1888. He received his education at Loyola College, and Laval University. Before joining the Royal 22nd Regiment in 1915, he practised law in Montreal. After a distinguished war service, he became aide-de-camp to Governor-General Byng (1921-1922). This was followed by his attendance at the Royal Staff College in Camberley, England. In 1925 he became commander of the Royal 22nd and served Governor-General Willingdon as A.D.C. until 1928. He then commenced his diplomatic career serving on a number of international bodies connected with the League of Nations and he attended the London Naval Conference. From 1931 to 1938 he was Secretary, Office of the High Commissioner of Canada in the United Kingdom. In 1939 he was appointed Canadian to Canada where he served as member of the Canada-United States Joint Board on Defence (1940-42) as well as being appointed Canadian Minister to Allied governments in exile and Canadian Representative to the French Committee of National Liberation in 1943. This later office took him to Algiers in 1944. In the same year he was appointed Canadian Ambassador to Rome - a post he held until 1953 when he retired to Canada and served on the board of directors of various companies. In 1959 Major-General Goerges Vanier became the first French Canadian Governor General of Canada. He remained in this office until his death in 1967.

- The collection is divided into two main blocks (although called sub-series below, these blocks are not the object distinct entries in MIKAN) Sub-series B consists of material related to WWI, including 66 trench and battle maps at various scales (1916-18), 11 single sheet maps (1910-18), and 13 air photographs (1916-18). Sub-series B consists of maps not related to WWI, including 36 printed sheets of France, Belgium and Italy at various scales (1889-1943), 16 sets of Michelin and Bartholomew road maps of Europe (1938-1945), and 22 single sheet maps of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Africa, the United States (1910 to 1943).
