Sub-series consists of political and personal papers created by Joe Clark while he was Secretary of State for External Affairs. There are four types of files in the sub-series: correspondence, notes and memoranda files arranged chronologically (vols. 1-8), subject files, arranged alphabetically (vols. 8-17), scheduling files, arranged alphabetically (vol. 17), and press releases, arranged chronologically (vol.18).
The correspondence files include general correspondence, personal correspondence and correspondence with ambassadors, senators, other ministers and the Prime Minister. These correspondence files cover a variety of issues including federal-provincial relations and international organizations. The notes and memoranda files contain Mr. Clark's handwritten notes, taken during various meetings, reminders to himself on things to do, speech notes and responses on memoranda to and from staff.
The subject files contain files on trade and investment issues, foreign aid programs, Alberta, cabinet ministers, government priorities, the federal budget, foreign relations, the Gulf War and economic summits. Many of the files contain briefing materials prepared specifically for Mr Clark. The Breakfast Meeting files document Mr. Clark's meetings with other ministers to discuss departmental priorities and interdepartmental responsibilities.
The schedules, itineraries and agendas files document the scheduling within the office of the Secretary of State for External Affairs.
The press releases and statements are well organized reference copies of government, External Affairs, International Relations, CIDA and SSEA announcements, 1988-1989.
