Fonds comprises primarily original works by Gordon Johnston, dating 1979-1981. Over five hundred of the works form part of a series called "It Happened in Canada". This series illustrates strange and fascinating facts about Canada and important historical figures and events. Several Prime Ministers, including Sir John A. Macdonald, William Lyon Mackenzie King, R.B. Bennett and John Diefenbaker are illustrated, together with little known facts concerning their lives and political careers. Topics of note include early settlements and pioneer life, explorers, tragedies, animal stories, social movements, and geographical and meteorological anomalies.
Also included are forty examples of Johnston's general humour 'gag' cartoons and sixty works from an action cartoon panel, entitled "Jeff Buchanan", based on intrigue in the lives of northern bush pilots. As well, there are ten works by a fellow cartoonist who used the pen name Lo Linkert.
