La série se compose de dossiers du système de classification créés et utilisés par la Direction de la recherche. Ces dossiers sont néanmoins conformes au système de classification numérique utilisé par l'ensemble du Ministère. Ces dossiers traitent de nombreux sujets dont : les fermes expérimentales, les dossiers juridiques et les dossiers sur les biens, le personnel (dont William et Charles Saunders, W.T. Macoun, J.H. Grisdale, E.S. Archibald, et d'autres pionniers de l'agriculture scientifique), les expositions, les conférences, la participation à Expo 67, le Conseil de recherches pour la défense, la recherche entomologique, et l'irrigation.
Le sujets documentés par les photographies comprennent le personnel du ministère de l'agriculture, des visites officielles et des conférences; des édifices du ministère de l'agriculture et des stations de recherche au Canada, incluant la Ferme expérimentale centrale à Ottawa (Ont.); l'aménagement paysager, les jardins floraux, l'horticulture, les rocailles, les parcs; l'équipement de ferme et la machinerie agricole, les serres, les salles d'expérimentation sur la croissance des plantes, la génétique, la fabrication du beurre et du fromage, les clôtures, le lin, les élévateurs à grain, le défrichement de terrains, le sucre d'érable, l'élevage de moutons, les silos, les betteraves sucrières, le tabac, le blé, les éoliennes; le drainage, les digues, les scènes d'inondation, l'irrigation, l'érosion et l'amoncellement de terrain, les prairies; le dossier horticole Posselwhite, incluant des négatifs de verre de plantes vivaces, arbres et arbustes; des photos de Frank Nowosad sur l'agriculture nordique, Yukon et Territoires du Nord-Ouest; des diapositives couleur de projection d'Indian Head (Sask.) en 1941. - Biographie/Histoire administrative :

Canada. Agriculture Canada. Direction de la recherche : En 1959, on entama une réorganisation générale du Ministère, qui remplaça la structure des vingts dernières années. La nouvelle Direction de la recherche englobait les Services des fermes expérimentales et des sciences (rapport annuel, 1960, p. 6-7). A la suite à une réorganisation mineure en 1967-1968, on répartit les activités du Ministère en six directions, dont la Direction de la recherche. La Direction de la recherche avait pour mandat d'accroître la productivité de l'agriculture canadienne (rapport annuel, 1967-1968). En 1979, après d'autres réorganisations, le Ministère fut divisé en quatre grandes directions opérationnelles, dont la Direction de la recherche. Cette direction indépendante relevait directement du Ministère par l'intermédiaire de son propre sous-ministre adjoint (rapport annuel, 1979-1980, p. 4).
