Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the File Hills-Qu'Appelle Agency. The series includes general operational records, letters received, central registry files, letterbooks, agent's reports, and daily journals.
Indian and Eskimo Affairs Program (Canada). File Hills-Qu'Appelle Agency : The File Hills-Qu'Appelle Agency in Saskatchewan was created by the amalgamation of the File Hills and Qu'Appelle agencies on 12 June 1948. The File Hills-Qu'Appelle Agency and the Touchwood Agency merged to form the Touchwood-File Hills-Qu'Appelle District Office, Saskatchewan, effective 1 November 1970.
An acting Treaty 4 agent for the first Qu'Appelle agency was appointed on 11 May 1877 (confirmed by O/C 231 dated 12 February 1879). The first incumbent agent, Edwin Allen, was appointed in 1880 (O/C 1376 dated 2 September 1880). This agency, responsible for the whole of Treaty 4, was to be split at that time. For unspecified reasons, Allen was removed before the end of his first year as agent. The actual split took place in 1884. Treaty 4 bands appear to have been under the responsibility of an agent working out of a nearby locality as early as 1874. This agency was dissolved in 1885 but another one with the same name was amalgamated with File Hills under the name Qu'Appelle (confirmed by O/C dated 4 April 1901). This new agency absorbed the Assiniboine Agency on 20 July 1935.
Although the File Hills Agency had operated as an independent agency responsible for bands in Treaty 4 in Saskatchewan from the time an acting agent was first appointed in 1885 (Annual Report, 1885 p. lii) and the first incumbent agent was appointed on 12 March 1888, from ca. 1901 to 1914, the File Hills bands were under the responsibility of the Qu'Appelle agent. The File Hills Agency was amalgamated with Qu'Appelle on 12 June 1948 under the name File Hills-Qu'Appelle Agency. Regional Administrative Histories, 1958-1990, (Bands, Agencies, Districts).
