Canada. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Market and Industry Services Branch : The Market and Industry Services Branch of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada was created in 1993. Predecessors to this branch have included the Economics Branch (1918-1938), Marketing Service (1938-1959), Production and Marketing Branch (1959-1986), and Agri-Food Development Branch (1986-1993), and various smaller related sections including the Regional Development Branch, International Affairs Branch, and National Programs Directorate. In 1959, marketing and production functions had expanded and were distributed throughout the Department of Agriculture. Measures were then taken to consolidate these various disparate programs and operations under the Production and Marketing Branch. This branch was subsequently re-organized and renamed several times over a thirty year period before receiving its current designation in 1993. The Market and Industry Services Branch works with the agri-food sector to enhance its global competitiveness and in so doing, increase the sector's share of both domestic and international markets for agriculture and agrifood products. The three primary functions of MISB are to 1. Expand Market Access; 2. Improve Knowledge; and 3. Increase Investment. To achieve its goals and functions, MISB has a diverse, multifaceted structure and is organized into a number of bureaus, divisions, and directorates. These include Trade Agreements and Negotiations Directorate, Operations Directorate, Sector Development and Analysis Directorate, International Markets Bureau, Policy Planning and Emergency Management, and the Market Access Secretariat.
