Series consists of records covering the entire duration of the Mobile Exhibits Programme, from 1972 to 1987. The records include the operational files relating to five museumobiles which traveled across Canada (see accession 46742, 1993-94/485). The correspondence, reports, memoranda, and tables of statistics and polls within this series illustrates the formulation of policies, the implementation of the programme, the conceptualization and the coordination of the activities of the museumobiles, the conservation of the museum artefacts, as well as the relations with the public, the regional associations and the provinces.
The records in this series also include operational files relating to the Discovery Train programme (see accession 45310, 1989-90/077). The files cover a wide range of subjects including the establishment of the programme, its administration and disposal, and the exhibits that were displayed. In this connection, a large number of files touch on the loan of artifacts and specimens for use in the train and the design and fabrication of exhibits. Other files deal with the activities of consultants, publicity and public relations, sponsors, and the selection of sites. Finally, several files involve the question of provincial and community liaison, merchandizing, and public creation.
RG132M 934006 portrays, through coloured pins, the sites visited by mobile museums including: "Canada north", established Jan. 1973; "Canada west", Jan. 1976; "Canada Atlantic", Feb. 1977; and "Canada prairies", May 1987. The insets on the map provide the colour coding for the mobile museums visiting sites in combinations of three, two or singly. Also, the number of sites, viewing days and hours, and attendance is provided.Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :National Museums of Canada. Mobile Exhibits Programme : The Mobile Exhibits Programme was established in 1978 in order to amalgamate the operations of the Discovery Train and the Museumobile Division. The latter had been in operation since 1972. Both the Museumobile Division and its successor, the Mobile Exhibits Programme, represented components of the National Programmes Branch. The Mobile Exhibits Programme built and maintained the museumobiles which exhibited artifacts and specimens from three regions of the country - the Atlantic, the West, and the North. The museumobiles traveled to all parts of the country, providing access to a museum experience for people who may otherwise never have such an opportunity. The Discovery Train, whose inaugural tour began in 1978, provided a service similar to the museumobiles until its operations were discontinued in 1980.
