Series consists of records created and/or maintained by the Claims Sector and its predecessor, the Office of Native Claims. The series includes claims agreements, which, like the historic treaties held in the Indian and Inuit Affairs sous-fonds (RG10), contain the text of the specific or comprehensive claim settlements. They also bear the signatures of the Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs along with the signatures of the representatives of the Indigenous peoples involved in the agreements. They range in subject from comprehensive claims covering huge areas and many complex issues involving aboriginal control over resources to specific claims such as a railway right of way through an Indian reserve., The cartographic material in this series consists of 11 James Bay Cree settlement maps, a Canadian National Railway right-of-way blueprint map showing the extent of the Parry Island Band Claim; an original map of the land claim boundary line between the Tungavik Federation of Nunavut (TFN) and the land claim of the Dene/Métis of the Northwest Territories; 15 maps showing the Inuvialuit territories in the Franklin and Mackenzie districts of the Northwest Territories, as outlined in the Inuvialuit Land Rights Settlement; and 84 maps of the Gwich'in comprehensive land claim agreement., The graphic material in this series consists of photographs documenting the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec agreement, the signing of the Gwich'in comprehensive land claim agreement, and the signing of the Sahtu Dene and Metis comprehensive land claim agreement. Please consult linked accessions for more information., The objects in this series consist of medals commemorating the signing of the James Bay and Northern Quebec agreement., The audiovisual material in this series includes sound recordings of public hearings held by the Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut Ratification Committee. Canada. Dept. of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. Claims Sector : The Office of Claims Negotiation (Bureau des négociations, revendications) was established in 1974 by the Department of Indian Affairs to deal with all Native claims, including Indian, Inuit and Métis. The name was changed to the Office of Native Claims (Bureau des revendications des autochtones) in 1976. The main function of the office was to represent the Minister and the Department of Indian Affairs in the negotiation of Native claims. The Office conducted basic research on submitted claims, developed claims resolution policies, conducted negotiations with claimants, and initiated and monitored claims settlements. The Office of Native Claims consulted closely with other government agencies (e.g. the Department of Justice or the Department of Finance), provincial or territorial governments Native associations, and special consultants. Headed by an Executive Director and later, an Assistant Deputy Minister, the office reported directly to the Deputy Minister. In 1986 the Office of Native Claims was closed. Responsibility for comprehensive claims was transferred to the Comprehensive Claims Branch of the Self-Government Sector within the Indian and Inuit Affairs Program, while responsibility for specific claims was transferred to the Specific Claims Branch of the Lands, Revenues and Trusts Sector. In 1989 the Comprehensive Claims Branch became a part of the Northern Affairs Program. Under the reorganization of 1991 both Specific Claims and Comprehensive Claims were made part of the Claims Sector, reporting to a Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Claims. RG22 General Inventory
