Series consists of files created and/or maintained by the General Superintendent of the Postal Services. The files relate to Post Office establishment, accommodation and outfitting. Reels T-8965 to T-8967 consist of files dealing with typical equipment, fittings, and accommodation in Post Office facilities, 1915-1937. Reels T-9160 to T-9271 contain files covering the period 1905 to 1939 consisting of correspondence relating to Post Office accommodations, fittings, boxes, land purchases, renovations, floor plans, rental facilities, and petitions. Reels T-8973 to T-8975 contain files that relate to the establishment, operation and closing of Post Offices in Prince Edward Island, 1877-1938. The correspondence covers such matters as the dismissal or resignation of the Postmaster, political patronage, and the general operation of the office.
Canada. General Superintendent of Postal Services : The position of General Superintendent of Postal Services was established as a result of the 1922 reorganization in the Post Office. The General Superintendent was responsible for all postal service including mail service, railway mail service, contract securement and inspections. Chief Superintendents or Branch heads reported to the General Superintendent. Established in 1923, the Postal Services Branch was responsible for mail service, including accommodation, railway mail, contracts and the inspection function. In 1947 the General Superintendent of Postal Service organization was split into the Operations Branch and the Communications (transportation function) Branch, both of which reported to the Deputy.
