Series consists largely of films made by the National Film Board, notably documentaries about a wide range of subjects and aspects of Canadian life. There are also some fiction feature films produced by the National Film Board, the relatively small number reflecting the Film Board's emphasis on documentary production. The sub-series also includes some productions acquired but not made by the Film Board, mainly for use as as research material and stock footage for new films. There are also some films made by the National Film Board's predecessor, the Canadian Government Motion Picture Bureau, as well as a small number of early films made by other government agencies, notably the national museums. The National Film Board's role in the distribution of Canadian film is reflected by another group of films in this sub-series, the films distributed by the Board across Canada and internationally as part of the Canadian Travel Film Program. These films were made by various Canadian film companies, most commissioned by the federal, provincial and territorial governments, about tourist attractions in Canada. The National Film Board productions in this sub-series include close to 4800 completed productions as well as pre-production elements such as negatives, unedited source footage, and some out-takes not used for final versions. Films from other sources tend to consist only of completed versions. The videotapes consist largely of videocassette copies of National Film Board productions, some of which are also held at the National Archives of Canada on film. The sound recordings include both soundtracks used in completed productions and unedited interviews intended for use in completed films.
