Series consists of material created and/or maintained by the department and its predecessors in support of the promotion of policies and objectives related to indigenous peoples, northern economic development, and National Parks and Historic Sites. There are also some textual materials related to departmental committees and joint councils intermixed in the series.
The material in this series reflects a range of communications-related activities undertaken by the department and its predecessors, including:
- Commissioning and sponsoring of motion pictures and films (primarily made by the National Film Board of Canada)
- Distribution of films, photographs, and other promotional material
- Creation of exhibitions
- Creation of departmental publications
- Creation and distribution of news releases and press items
- Development of speeches and official statements
The textual files in this series deal mainly with subjects related to northern economic development and the promotion of National Parks and Historic Sites from the era 1936-1960.
The photographic material in this series documents a variety of department-sponsored events from 1900-1979, including visits of dignitaries and politicians with indigenous peoples. Images of indigenous peoples engaged in occupations and activities that aligned with the department's assimilation policies feature heavily. The photos are primarily from the era 1950s-1960s, when the Department of Citizenship and Immigration was responsible for indigenous affairs. Please consult the linked accession records for more information.
The audiovisual material attached to this series includes, but is not limited to, records documenting the signing of agreements, the history of various aboriginal communities, and issues related to the environment and natural resources in the North. Please consult the linked accession records for more information.
The series also consists of posters created and/or maintained by the department to promote programs, activities, and events.
