Canada. Canadian Armed Forces. Royal Canadian Regiment. Battalion, 2nd : The Royal Canadian Regiment is Canada's oldest regular infantry regiment having been first raised on 31 December 1883, primarily for the training of the Canadian Militia. The Regiment saw active service during the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, helped enforce order as part of the Yukon Field Force during the Yukon gold rush, and was sent, in 1899, as a second (special force) battalion of volunteers to serve in the South African War. In 1901, the unit adopted the title Royal. The Royal Canadian Regiment fought as part of the 7th Brigade, 3rd Division in the First World War, winning battle honours in some of the bloodiest battles of that conflict. In 1939, the regiment was mobilized for active service and took part in the invasion of Sicily and then Italy in 1943 as part of the 1st Canadian Division. After fighting through the Italian campaign it finished the war in Holland. 2nd Battalion, Royal Canadian Regiment (2 RCR) was formed on 7 August 1950, and all three battalions of the Royal Canadian Regiment eventually served in the Korean Conflict. In 1953, 2 RCR began a tour of duty in Germany and returned home in 1955 after being relieved by 1 RCR. 2 RCR was appointed as Canada's United Nations Stand-by unit in 1958, and was trained for both police and military duties and on call at short notice. Along with 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and 3rd Battalion, Royal 22nd Regiment, 2 RCR were allocated for the role of ground defence of the Canada-United States Region on 2 April 1962, in accordance with the Canadian-United States Emergency Defence. In 1970, the unit was transferred from Wolseley Barracks in London, Ontario and stationed at CFB Gagetown, New Brunswick. Parts of the unit were engaged in a six month peacekeeping tour of Cyprus in 1983. Returning from Cyprus, 2 RCR remained a regular force mechanized infantry battalion but was a lodger unit of the Combat Training Centre (CTC) at CFB Gagetown and under operational control of 5 Mechanized Brigade Group at CFB Valcartier. On 20 January 1994, 2 RCR was placed under the command of the CTC except for operations. General inventory
