Mazankowski, Don, 1935- : Donald Frank Mazankowski, Cabinet Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, was born July 27, 1935, in Viking, Alberta. Educated at Viking schools. In 1987, he received an honorary degree (D. Eng.) from the Technical University of Nova Scotia; LL.D. (Hon.) from University of Alberta, 1993. From 1963-1968, he was President and General Manager, Ray-Don Motors, Vegreville, Alberta. He was first elected to the House of Commons for Vegreville, Alberta, in 1968 and was re-elected in 1972, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1984 and 1988. As member of the opposition he served as Chairman of the Caucus Committee on Transportation and Communication, 1972-1974, and was appointed Transportation Policy Co-ordinator in 1974. He was also a member of the Standing Committees on Agriculture, and Transport and Communication. Mazankowski was appointed Progressive Conservative Caucus Chairman in September, 1973 and re-appointed following the 1974 election. Co-chair for the 1976 Leadership Convention and P.C. general meeting, Ottawa, February 1981. Sworn to Privy Council June 4, 1979. He served in the Clark government as Minister of Transport (1979-1980) and Minister Responsible for the Canadian Wheat Board (1979-1980). He served in the Mulroney government as Minister of Transport (1984-1986); Acting Minister of Regional Expansion (1986); Minister responsible for Expo 86 (1985-1986); Deputy Prime Minister (1986-1993); President of the Queen's Privy Council (1986-1991); President of Treasury Board (1987-1988); Minister of Agriculture (1988-1991); Minister of State and Privatization (1988-1989) and Minister of Finance (1991-1993). Received the title, (Rt. Hon.), June 18, 1993 from the Rt. Hon. Brian Mulroney. Mazankowski did not seek re-election in the 1993 general election. Donald Mazankowski died on Oct. 27, 2020.
