Fonds consists of records relating to Roberts' St. Paul constituency in Toronto, Ontario and to the ministerial portfolios that he held. These include: Secretary of State; Minister of State for Science and Technology; and Employment and Immigration, 1966-1992.

The fonds consists of photographs of Roberts' activities with his constituents, at various minsterial functions and at the 1984 Liberal Leadership convention, 1980-1984.

The fonds also contains sound recordings of interviews of Roberts, as well as an open-line radio broadcast featuring Roberts, speeches at poitical meetings, a speech to the Economic Club of Detroit about the Environment; and a video recording of highlights of a conference in the Ukraine about the creation of democratic systems in which Roberts was a participant, 1968-1992.

Roberts, John, 1933-2007 : John Roberts was born on 28 November 1933 in Hamilton, Ontario. He studied at the University of Toronto, Osgoode Hall in England, and the École National d'administration in Paris, and earned a B.A., and a Ph.D. from each of the latter universities. Roberts's early career consisted of being a Foreign Service Office with the Department of External Affairs, 1963-1966, and an Executive Assistant to the Minister of Forestry and Rural Development, from 1966-1968.

Roberts was first elected to the House of Commons in the general election of 1968, defeated in 1972, and was re-elected in 1974. He was defeated in 1979, re-elected in 1980, and defeated in the general election of 1984. From 1968 to 1972, Roberts represented the riding of York-Simcoe in Toronto. After 1974, he was returned to the Toronto riding of St. Paul's.

From 1 October 1971 to 1 September 1972, Roberts was Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Regional and Economic Expansion. He was sworn to the Privy Council on 14 September 1976 and held the position of Secretary of State of Canada from that date until the Ministry was resigned on 3 June 1979. Upon his re-election in 1980, Roberts was again sworn to the Privy Council, and held the dual posts of Minister of the Environment and Minister of State for Science and Technology from 3 March 1980 to 1983. His final ministerial post was that of Minister of Employment and Immigration from 1983 to 1984.

Roberts concluded his political career by standing for the leadership of the Liberal party in 1984. When it became apparent that he lacked the support to win, Roberts walked over to Hon. Jean Crétien.

Following the termination of his official political career, Roberts wrote "An Agenda for Canada" in 1985. From 1987 to 1988, he became a vocal member of the group A.L.A.R.M. (Association of Liberals for the Amendment and Reform of Meech).
