National Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers Union of Canada : The International Union, United Automobile, Aircraft and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW), a labour union, was chartered by the American Federation of Labor in 1935. An early supporter of the Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO), the UAW first established itself in Canada when auto parts workers at Kelsey Wheel in Windsor, Ontario, joined the union in 1936. A notable event in the union's early history was the 1937 strike against General Motors in Oshawa, Ontario. The Canadian UAW's membership grew significantly during World War II, as major firms such as Ford of Canada, Chrysler, and Massey-Harris were organized, as well as many smaller plants. Immediately after the war, the Canadian UAW was one of the leaders in the post-war drive to obtain union security (such as the dues check-off and union shop) and major wage increases. The 1945 strike against Ford of Canada in Windsor, Ontario, which resulted in the Rand Formula for union security, was a major event in this drive. In the 1950s, such issues as pension plans, health insurance, and supplemental unemployment benefits were increasingly prominent in the UAW's collective bargaining. The Canadian UAW was one of the major affiliates of the Canadian Congress of Labour during 1940-1956, and has been affiliated with the Canadian Labour Congress since 1956. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Canadian UAW found itself increasingly at odds with the Detroit-based international union because of the latter's acceptance of wage reductions and other concessions in contract negotiations with employers. Unable to obtain sufficient autonomy within the international UAW, the Canadian UAW broke away in 1985 and re-established itself as the National Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers Union of Canada (commonly known as the Canadian Auto Workers, or CAW). In 1987, the CAW reported a membership of 143,000. Since its separation from the American branch of the union, the CAW has expanded significantly through a series of mergers, notably with the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers (1992) and the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway, Transport and General Workers (1994). Basil ("Buzz") Hargrove became national president of the CAW in 1992. His predecessors as president or Canadian director were Robert White (1978-1992), Dennis McDermott (1968-1978), George Burt (1939-1968), and Charles Millard (1937-1939).
