Tupper, Sir Hector Langevin and Michael H. Herbert; 1885-1893, microfilm; journal kept by Lady Stanley of the itinerary of their western trip in 1889 and a CPR timetable, 1889, microfilm. The material is available on microfilm reels A-446 and A-673.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Derby, Frederick Arthur Stanley, Earl of, 1841-1908 : Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, 1st Baron Stanley of Preston, 16th Earl of Derby (1841-1908), had a brief military career, and in 1865 entered politics. He came to hold many political offices, in the War Office, the Admiralty and the Colonial Office. In 1888 he became Governor-General of Canada. He returned to England in 1893, where he applied his talent for administration to domestic affairs. He was particularly involved with the City of Liverpool, and in 1901 became involved with the plan to build a new Anglican cathedral in that city. Lord Stanley - as he was known when he resided in Canada - took a great interest in outdoor recreation and sport in Canada. SInce 1926 his name has been associated with the Stanley Cup, and Stanley Park in Vancouver was named in his honour in 1888. He was inducted into the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame in 1945.
