Incorporated by Act of Parliament in 1825, as a land and colonization company, it received its Charter in 1826 and operated until it was dissolved in December 1953. In 1826, the Canada Company purchased from the government some two and one half million acres of land, half in what was known as the Huron Tract (Western Ontario), and the remainder in the Halton and Wilmot blocks as well as scattered crown reserves across the province. The payments went to the executive branch of the Upper Canada government to the dismay of Reformers in the elcted assembly.
After the Act of Union (1841), the company's connection to the Tory elite diminished. With the implementation of a leasing system, the company operated more effectively and less conspicuously.
