This program is about the crisis after Colonel Nasser, President of Egypt, took over the Suez Canal on 26 July 1956 and nationalized the Suez Canal Company. In 1956, Nasser was determined to pursue the conflict with Israel and wanted revenge for the humiliation Egypt suffered in the war with Jewish forces fighting for a homeland in the Middle East. The state of Israel had been established in 1948. In the summer of 1949, an armistice ended the first Arab-Israeli war and a United Nations Truce Supervision Organization was in the region. A Canadian, Major General E.L.M. Burns, was its chief of staff. In the 1950s, Arab countries still refused to recognize Israel, although the United Nations had. Nasser also wanted Egypt to be strong and independent, free of British control. He believed that British imperialism had thwarted growth of a strong Egypt. He felt that the British military base in the Canal zone had to be eliminated and moved to nationalize the canal. When Britain's Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, said he might use force to get the Suez Canal back, Canadian Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent and his Minister of External Affairs, Lester B. Pearson, refused to support Britain. France was on Britain's side in this. Many Canadians wanted Canada to support Britain. In November 1956 a ceasefire was announced and the United Nations Emergency Force was created. Lester B. Pearson played an important role in the creation of the Suez peacekeeping force and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. The radio documentary includes archival clips of: Ambassador Lodge, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and President Dwight D. Eisenhower, when the crisis worsened on 29 October 1956; Egypt's Ambassador to France expressing Egypt's official government position on 1 November 1956; M.J. Coldwell, leader of the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation; Charles Lynch reporting from the United Nations on 2 November 1956; CBC news anchor Earl Cameron announcing a ceasefire on 5 November 1956; comments by Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent; a news report by Earl Cameron on 6 November 1956; comments by Frank Herbert of the CBC, Dag Hammarskjold and Charles Lynch; General E.L.M. Burns, Commander of the United Nations Emergency Force and Charles Lynch, reporting from New York, about the United Nations Emergency Force which was created by 16 November 1956; interview of Lester B. Pearson on 14 October 1957 when he learned that he had won the Nobel Peace Prize; the presentation of the Nobel Prize to Pearson in Oslo on 11 December 1957; and a message by Dag Hammarskjold to members of the peacekeeping force. <30mn>Langue :EnglishDétails de l'inventaire :No. de voûte (ISN) :207802Support :SOUNDDétails de l'inventaire :1992-0242/098
