World's Fair. The story shows the opening parade at the Court of Peace, led by New York Governor Herbert Lehman, New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, a municipal delegation from New York City and the President of the Fair, Grover A. Whelan. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrives in an open car to dedicate the fair. There are shots of the crowd of 100,000 people. There is actuality of Roosevelt speaking. He says "I hereby dedicate the world's fair, the New York World's Fair, of 1939, declare it open to all mankind". 2) Coronation of Pope Pius XII. This item shows a crowd of 200,000 people in St. Peter's Square in Rome, as bells ring from St. Peter's Basilica, which is shown, and the new Pope makes the sign of the cross from a balcony. Heard is the speech in Latin by the Dean of the Cardinal Deacons. He holds the triple Papal crown and places it on the head of Pope Pius XII. The Pope then speaks in Latin. 3) Reds Invade Finland. Rain Bombs on Helsinki. This item shows various views of Helsinki and its port. Russian bombers bomb Helsinki, sending people scrambling. The 500-pound incendiary bombs, in the words of the narrator, "stun civilians". People seek safety in underground shelters, away from the "Red blitzkreig, red with fire and red with blood". People who have no shelter as the bombs drop around them line up facing walls. Smoking debris is everywhere. The Finns claim the bombing has strengthened their resistance. The narrator says of the Russians that they have wrecked the city but not the morale of a nation. 4) Nazis Scuttle Graf Spee Off Montevideo.~This item shows Uruguay's Montevideo harbour and a commemorative tribute by German Navy Officers for dead crew of the German pocket battleship Graf Spee which had been attacked in battle in the South Atlantic. Shown is commander of the ship, Captain Langsdorff. There are shots of the Graf Spee leaving the harbour and burning after being "put to the torch by its own commander". 5) Sports Thrills of 1939. a) The Disputed Mile. This item shows a men's race at Princeton University. Stanley Wilderson of England is overtaken by American runners in the "most disputed athletic event of 1939". Footage seems to indicate Wilderson being jostled by an American runner. b) New York's Yankee Stadium. This item shows the end of the 16-year career of baseball player Lou Gehrig. He is heard telling the stadium crowd "I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth". He is described erroneously as suffering from infantile paralysis. c) Wilbur Shaw wins Indianapolis Classic (the Indianapolis 500) automobile race. At the 266-mile mark driver Bob Swanson's car skids to the outside causing Lloyd Roberts' car to burst into flames. Roberts dies. Swanson is slightly injured.
