As a youth, Underwood recalls being signed up as a Boy Scout by Lord Baden-Powell. Later, Underwood began working as a "cue boy" and stagehand at the vaudeville houses in Britain where he became acquainted with the vaudeville stars of the day, in particular, Gracie Fields, Harry Houdini and Charlie Chaplin.
