Note générale :
The Portrait of George Cartwright by William Hilton the Elder shows him outdoors dressed in his hunting gear, which is part European, part Beothuk (the deer-skin jacket) and part Inuit (the snowshoes). Cartwright has put a hood over his dog's head because he does not want him to disturb the deer he has sighted. The portrait was done specifically to celebrate and illustrate the publication of Cartwright's Journal. The frontispiece to volume 1 contains the engraving by T. Medland after this painting, with the title Captain Cartwright visiting his Fox-traps.
