Volume 1006 contains files ranging from 1-114 to 1459-75-20 which deal with the liaison between the Company and Transport Canada. These files assume Company numbers rather than Transport Canada's. The series also includes central registry files from Transport Canada's central registry system (volumes 1843-1846).Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Canadian National (West Indies) Steamships, Limited : Canadian National (West Indies) Steamships, Limited was created as the result of a Trade Agreement dated 6 July 1925 between the Government of Canada and the Governments of the various British Colonies in the Carribean. The Agreement was approved by Dominion Act, 16-17 George V, Cap. 16 of 15 June 1926. The agreement provided for mutual tariff concessions and, from the Canadian government, an undertaking to provide regular shipping services for mail, passengers and freight (including perishable freight) with suitable vessels for both the Eastern and Western groups of colonies. The colonies undertook to pay subsidies towards this service.
The company was incorporated under Dominion Letters Patent on 16 April 1927 to implement the Agreement and operate the services. Contracts were placed for suitable vessels and, at the end of 1929, the fleet consisted of the Lady Nelson (1928-1952), Lady Hawkins (1928-1942), Lady Drake (1929-1942), Lady Somers (1929-1940), Lady Rodney (1929-1946), Cavalier (1929-1946), Cathcart (1929-1946), Connector (1929-1946), Champlain (1929-1932), Colborne (1929-1947), Chomedy (1929-1947), Cornwallis (1929-1944). As with the other Canadian National steamship interests, each ship was the sole property of a holding company which entrusted the ship to the main company for operation.
Until 1934 the service was run at a deficit but, as trade was built up, subsequent years until 1948 saw an operating profit as well as the service's contribution to Canada/West Indies trade. The fleet was drastically reduced by war losses and the postwar sale of the older vessels. New ships acquired as replacements were, in 1946, the Canadian Conqueror, Canadian Cruiser and Canadian Observer and, in 1947, the Canadian Challenger, Canadian Constructor, Canadian Highlander, Canadian Leader and Canadian Victor. Service continued, usually at an operational deficit, until 1957. In July of that year, a strike forced the suspension of service. By May 1958, it was concluded that service could never be resumed at a reasonable cost and, in August, the vessels were sold and the Company run down.
