Included are a correspondence series, including letters from other writers and scholars, documenting Johnston's career as a poet and translator, and a writings and translations series, including drafts of Johnston's translations, reviews of his books of poetry, material on his critical and biographical writings, and other records.
The fonds also contains Christmas and greetings cards sent to George and Jeanne Johnston and photographs documenting a reading tour of Great Britain, 1980, by George Johnston and poets bill bissett and Susan Musgrave.
The fonds also contains 30 of Johnston's diaries often with indexes, describing, literary events, teaching, meeting with other writers and editors as well as travel, family life, farm life and keeping house. Includes comments and feelings on the exchanges and events detailed, and on material read.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Johnston, George, 1913-2004 : George Johnston, born in 1913 in Hamilton, Ont., was educated at the University of Toronto. After serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force (R.C.A.F.) during the Second World War, Johnston taught at Mount Allison University from 1947 to 1949 and then moved to Ottawa where he joined the English Department of Carleton College (later Carleton University) in 1950. He retired in 1980, moving to a farm in Athelstan where he kept bees and continued to write. Johnston, who married Jeanne McCrae in 1944, has six children. During his years in Ottawa, he was a member of the Religious Society of Friends.
George Johnston is the author of several collections of poetry, including "The Cruising Auk" (1959), "Home free" (1966), "Happy enough" (1972), "Taking a grip" (1979), "Auk Redivivus" (1981) and "Endeared by dark: the collected poems" (1990). He was a professor of Old Norse and Anglo-Saxon at Carleton University and is an internationally-known scholar and translator. He has published translations of a number of Icelandic sagas, including "The saga of Gisli" (1963), "The Faroe Islanders" saga' (1975) and "The Greenlanders' saga" (1976), as well as compiling and translating an anthology of Faroese poetry, "Rocky shores" (1981), and translating poems of the Norwegian poet Knut Odegard, "Wind over Romsdal" (1982) and "Bee-buzz, Salmon Leap" (1989).
Johnston is also the editor of the "Collected poems of George Whalley" (1986) and the author of "Carl, portrait of a painter" (1986), about the artist Carl Schaefer. His contributions to literature have been recognized by honorary degrees from Queen's and Carleton, an issue of "Malahat review" was devoted to him and a festschrift, "The Old enchanter: a portrait of George Johnston", was published in 1999.Information additionnelle :Note générale :Received between 1978 and 2000 from George Johnston of Huntingdon, Québec.
