(John), 1791-1872 : John Bethune, an Anglican Clergyman, dean of the diocese of Montreal, and acting principle of McGill University was born 5 January, 1791 at Charlottenburg (Williamstown), Upper Canada, and died 22 August, 1872 in Montreal.
John Bethune was the third son of John and [Alexander] Bethune, a Minister of the Church of Scotland. Bethune, the younger, was received into the Church of England, and served the Cornwall Anglicans as a layreader between 1812 and 1814 when he was ordained in Quebec's Holy Trinity Cathedral. In 1818, he was posted to Montreal as Minister of Christ Church and 1st rector of the Anglican Parish of Montreal.
In 1835, he was appointed principal pro tem. of McGill University, and was awarded an honorary doctorate by Columbia University in 1837 and by McGill in 1843. In 1850, Bethune became rector of Christ Church Cathedral. Bethune became Dean of Christ Church Cathedral, the first in Canada to receive that dignity.
